The site is accessed from a new purpose-built roadway which provides safe vehicular and pedestrian access to the school. As part of the Civil and Structural services provided by PUNCH Consulting Engineers, new houses for the religious community in the convent were also designed and constructed. PUNCH designed the road to address the changes in site levels, as well as the required minimum sight distances, involving close co-operation with the local authority.
The new Colaiste Chathail Naofa replaces the old Dungarvan VEC School which had come to the end of its useful life as an education facility. The new purpose built school, designed by Shay Cleary Architects, was located on a site on the old convent on the Cork Road and contains all of the elements necessary to provide for the changing education requirements of the students.
The brief required that the school be designed to minimise the energy requirements, while also complying with the Department of Education budget limitations. Working closely with the rest of the design team, PUNCH Consulting Engineers detailed all structural elements to minimise sound transfer, maximise thermal performance and daylight penetration to reduce maintenance and associated costs as much as possible.
