PUNCH provided Civil, Structural and Traffic Engineering services on this project. As the design team and the client shared a desire to provide a sustainable solution to the design issues, all team members worked together to provide Sustainable design services on the project which resulted in a naturally ventilated, low energy and low maintenance solution.
Drogheda College of Further Education was constructed to replace the outdated facility in St. Lawrence’s Vocational Education College (VEC) Drogheda Town constructed in the 1920s. The town was undergoing rapid expansion and so the provision of this 550 pupil facility was seen as a key element in meeting the educational needs. It involved the provision of teaching and social spaces, as well as a large purpose built gymnasium and playing pitches. The new Drogheda Institute of Further Education provides Further Education courses which are of the highest quality to school leavers and adults returning to education.
The project utilised cost effective low maintenance construction and so strict controls were placed on the quality of the finishes by PUNCH Consulting Engineers and the design team. Most structure was expressed and the exposed blockwork received particular attention including the Forticrete external leaf.
