Carrick-On-Suir Primary Care Centre Flood Risk Assessment
- Client: Health Service Executive
- Completion date: Sept 2014
- PUNCH services: Flood Risk Assessment
PUNCH Consulting Engineers prepared a full Stage 3 Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) for a proposed Primary Care Centre on the banks of the River Suir. Despite its inland nature, the River Suir is tidal to just beyond Carrick–on-Suir so both Fluvial and Coastal flooding was considered a flood risk at this site.
PUNCH Consulting Engineers prepared a 1D hydraulic model of the River Suir to establish the extent of both coastal and river flooding at the site. Cross section data was prepared from a mixture of river surveys and Lidar information. Flood risk mapping was prepared for both the 1 in 100yr and 1 in 1000yr return period flood events to determine the flood zooming applicable to the site. Fluvial flood risk was estimated from the 1D model while expected extreme water levels from a coastal perspective were estimated from a statistical analysis of an OPW water monitoring gauge.
Due to its location in a medium to high risk zone, the FRA report included recommendations on floor levels, provision of compensatory storage, emergency access and closure procedures.
