PUNCH Consulting Engineers has worked extensively on projects for transportation services throughout Ireland. Services have included work in assessing the needs for road schemes, local area plans, and transportation assessments, junction design in support of planning applications as well as mobility management plans and road safety audits.
PUNCH has worked extensively on projects within the railway network in both the Republic and Northern Ireland. The services provided have included work on existing stations and bridges as well as new build bridges, roads and stations. Our clients include Local Authorities and private developers as well as Irish Rail themselves. More recently we have provided contractor designed structures for the Kildare Line Project and the LUAS B-1 line. We are also working for the Railway Procurement Agency on the inspection and monitoring of structures along the new LUAS A-1 line.
The experience PUNCH has gained over the years is wide ranging, varying from one-off developments through to transportation proposals for a 50 hectare site re-zoned to encompass both housing and local area shopping areas. Over the past 10 years we have extended our transportation skills and experience in response to the demand to provide an integrated engineering service to our clients.
Transportation is one of the critical issues associated with the planning of any development as the generated traffic will have one of the most perceivable impacts on the public at large. In many cases, the existing infrastructure into which any scheme connects will have limited capacity and there will be a need to justify and mitigate a development’s impact. Sustainable solutions need to be proposed considering both public and private means of transport as well as non motorised measures. The experience that PUNCH brings to the table satisfies these requirements as demonstrated in projects such as Dunboyne Area Action Plan, Co. Meath.
The changing approach of Local Authorities and overall needs of projects means that transportation needs to be considered at an early stage of any project as the integration of solutions later can have an adverse effect on the efficient delivery of any project. Clients can find that they have difficulty in achieving planning approvals without early intervention with the relevant sections of Local Authorities and they are finding that there is a need to demonstrate reduced dependence on private cars which PUNCH can assess with a Mobility Management Plan (MMP).
The experience that PUNCH has acquired in Transportation combines well with our provision of an integrated Civil Engineering service, in addition to other services such as structural, health and safety and project management. PUNCH can also provide early contributions into transportation issues to provide possible increased BREEAM ratings to schemes, an increasingly important requirement on any project.
PUNCH has been involved in railway related projects since the practice began in 1973, and the main highlights include:
The renewed focus on rail as an effective and environmentally friendly public transport system has seen major investment in the rail infrastructure, while the development of the roads network, and indeed many commercial projects, have created interfaces with the rail network. These interfaces require expert attention, which PUNCH provides, in order to satisfy the technical and safety requirements of both the Railway Authority and the Railway Safety Commission.
Our railway projects typically involve many engineering disciplines from road and bridge engineering, general civil, structural and environmental services, in addition to the services provided by PUNCH Health & Safety. Through our technical skills and knowledge of working in the railway environment, we have developed excellent working relationships with key personnel in Irish Rail over many years, and these form the basis of the efficient delivery of railway projects for third parties.
