PUNCH Collects Award for National Film Studios

PUNCH Consulting Engineers is delighted to announce its win of the Building Category award at the Irish Concrete Society Awards on Saturday night, 21st March, 2015. The award is in relation to the National Film School at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire which was completed in 2013.

“This is a real concrete construction,” said the Awards jury.

Together with ABK Architects and Collen Construction, PUNCH developed a welcoming addition to the bustling Dun Laoghaire campus. The three-storey National Film School comprises of two TV/film studios, two radio studios, a newsroom, control rooms, a scene dock, four lecture rooms, and other ancillary spaces.

Unlike PUNCH’s previous project with IADT, the Media Cube, the National Film School was not to be a standalone building, but rather an attachment to one of the campus’s existing buildings, the Quadrangle. The Quadrangle is a 19th century structure, the largest on the campus, and in order to successfully integrate with the new state-of-the-art film school, the design team developed a structural solution to ensure that the duration of the construction was as minimal as possible to avoid damaging the building’s current weathering.

In the midst of a bustling campus, consideration and careful planning ensured that the existing students and staff of IADT were not disrupted in their day to day activities, especially those who utilised the Quadrangle.

Just two months following completion, the President of Ireland, Mr. Michael D. Higgins, officially opened the National Film School on the 26th of November, 2013.

This award is just one of the many that the National Film School building has been nominated for. In 2014, it was awarded the School Project of the Year at the Irish Building and Design Awards. It was also shortlisted for the Irish Architecture Awards Culture category that same year.

The award is also one of many that PUNCH has received for their work in Civil and Structural Engineering in both Ireland and the UK. These awards demonstrate the company’s continuing ability to successfully develop buildings and structures to the very pinnacle of excellence.
