St Mel’s Cathedral Collects Three Awards at the Irish Architecture Awards 2015
The Restoration of St Mel’s Cathedral proved a huge success at the Irish Architecture Awards in Wood Quay on Thursday night, 18th June 2015. By popular vote, the project won the Public Choice Award after securing a majority of the 10,500 cast. It also won in two other categories: Conservation/Restoration and Universal Design, and it was also Highly Commended in the Research Category.
In the early hours of Christmas morning, 2009, a fire ripped through St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford, destroying both the interior and the roof of the historical building, which was built between 1840 and 1893.
The goal of this project was to restore the Cathedral to its former grandeur, with a goal of completing it by Christmas 2014, the 5th anniversary of the fire.
PUNCH was the Civil and Structural Engineer of this restoration project, deemed to be not only the largest conservation project in Ireland, but in Europe also. We were proud to work with Architects Fitzgerald Kavanagh & Partners and Main Contractor Gem Purcell Construction.
This is not the first win for St Mel’s Cathedral. In April of this year, it picked up the awards for both Building Project of the Year and Interior Architectural Project of the Year at the Irish Building and Design Awards.
Another successful PUNCH project to win at the ceremony held in Dublin City Council Offices was Athlone Community College, which picked up an award in the Best Educational category and was commended in the Universal Design category. This project formed one part of the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) Schools Bundle 3: PPP with BAM Construction (Design & Build). Athlone Community College also picked up an award at the Irish Building and Design Awards, for School Building Project of the Year.
The ongoing success of both projects is a positive reflection on the work carried out by PUNCH Consulting Engineers, who continue to set only the highest standards in the services they provide with each project they carry out.Back to top
