Structural investigation and assessment of masonry arch bridges

PUNCH Consulting Engineers, in collaboration with partners Doran Consulting Engineers NI, completed the stage 2 structural assessment of 105 masonry arch bridges in the Munster region for the National Roads Authority. Intrusive investigation was carried out by specialist Contractor Henderson Thomas Associates UK and consisted of coring of masonry arch barrels to determine thickness and quality. This information was then used to carry out a detailed assessment of the various structures to determine their ability to carry 40 tonne live loading. Assessment was carried out using specialist software Archie-M or the modified MEXE method, depending on the geometry of the individual structures. Site works were carried out seven days a week with over 150 cores being taken in total.

PUNCH were responsible for all site supervision, including weekend and night time working, as well as all assessment work and reporting.
